Recipe for curing CCB (Complete Creative Breakdown)

Creativity is not always easy.

Don’t let anyone tell you it’s just a fun hobby you do in your down time (though it can be that, also!) – accessing your creative being can be a very daunting business.

Here is my recipe for when you hit Complete Creative Breakdown and can’t seem to move ahead.  This technique was developed for when I get stuck making art, but it seems to work in many other situations, too.

When you feel grey and talentless and just…. hopeless about it all.  Running out of creative juice can make you feel really low, so it’s important to have tools on hand to transition through these feelings.

Ingredients:

Some time to yourself (even a few minutes)
Air
Your journal, if you have one, and some pens.
Optional but extra fab ingredient:  Crayons.

ALL the colours! You know you want them....

ALL the colours! You know you want them….

Method:

1) Close your eyes and take three deep breaths in and out.  Get yourself into this present moment – forget what you were just doing, should be doing or need to do next.  Just ‘BE’ for a second.

2) Connect with how you are feeling and just feel it for a moment.  Lean in closer and have a good feel.  Be honest about what’s going on and face it head on….. you’ll be amazed to notice the negative sensations starting to back off as you pay attention to them.  This is because they’ve been shouting loudly to get you to notice them and now they don’t have to!

3) Surrender.  Accept what’s happening, keep breathing and release every feeling of resistance.  It’s OK to feel this way, we all feel this way sometimes.

4) Ponder the mortality of all things.  No, seriously.  Remember that this situation will change, probably very soon.  Remember that it’s all temporary.  That doesn’t mean your feelings don’t matter, but it will put them in the right perspective.

5) Now, open your eyes and take some time to journal about what’s going on.  Avoid repetition, just get it out on paper.  This separates it from you and allows you to look at it from a safe distance.  Try these prompts:

I feel………………………………….. because ……………………………………….

I wish ………………………………………….

I would like to ………………………………………..

Tomorrow, I may feel ……………………………………….

The bad side of this situation is …………………………………

The good side of this situation is ……………………………………

I am learning how to ……………………………………..

6) Now, if you have time, use crayons or another coloured writing/drawing material (or even paint or collage) to decorate what you’ve just written.  Let go of outcomes, this is just playing.  Enjoy the feel of the materials, the colours, the sounds you make.

beams

I am beaming it from my eyeeee!

7) When you are done, take three more deep breaths in and out again.  Imagine a glittery rainbow of light arching down towards you.  This is my rainbow-glitter-ray-of-joy I am sending you right now…. can you feel it?  Good!
